Sooo I was tinkering around on my single player worlds. I was using MCEdit so I could find a friggin stronghold, and I came upon this! The lighted stalks and stuff indicate the support for the mineshaft things. All the little yellow blocks are either chests or monster spawners. Red blocks are mobs i think. Point is, look at how large this mine is. It goes through a ravine (the big thing in the middle) and continues a bit more off screen.

Yeah, I think they need to scale back the mineshafts a little more. They were ginormous before, and now they're still huge, it's very easy to get lost.
